Setting Leaders in Motion

Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives

How it all Began

During Dr. Fabong’s tenure (2017 – 2021), as Chairman of the Plateau State Youth Council, an inclusive organisation representing the youth across Plateau State, regardless of political affiliation, tribal background, or religious beliefs, he collaborated with the We Unite Foundation, under the direction of Rinmicit Temlong, to establish the pioneering mentoring initiative known as Mentor Monday.

This program served as a foundational model for fostering mentorship among this vital demographic. Held weekly on Mondays from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. over a year, Mentor Monday culminated in a graduation ceremony for the inaugural cohort of 13 participants, celebrating their achievements. Over the years, these graduates have launched their own mentorship cohorts, significantly impacting their community by taking on mentorship roles.

In 2021, a strategic brainstorming session with the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NiMSA), Dr. Umar Mohammed Danbuba, and his team, including Dr. Majority Hassan Haruna, created the Fabong Mentorship Program. This initiative was designed to provide structured mentoring to medical students across Nigeria, with the first cohort comprising representatives from all six geopolitical zones. After two years of rigorous training and sessions, 12 out of the initial 18 participants graduated, showcasing remarkable character and resilience. These two mentorship platforms launched the inaugural Leadership and Governance meeting, dubbed the Mentor’s Guide, in 2022. This meeting represented a critical milestone in our ongoing efforts to promote accountable governance.

The Mentor’s Guide convened an exceptional assembly of young leaders, each passionate and committed in their respective domains. Hailing from diverse backgrounds and sectors, participants shared a unified vision: transforming the leadership landscape through transparency, integrity, and proactive civic engagement principles. The inaugural session yielded an inspiring exchange of innovative ideas and actionable strategies to enhance governance across various levels. Evaluations of these encounters indicated a need for a more substantial cohort to reshape the mindset of young individuals, empowering them to advocate for accountability rather than engaging in discrediting the leadership. Series of editions of the Mentor’s Guide Conference helped to forge a consensus among youth on the respectful demand for accountability and meaningful contribution to future governance processes.
